On the 11 th of July 1897, a gas balloon called Örnen (“The Eagle”) took off from Danes Island in Svalbard. On-board were three men: Salomon August Andrée, Nils Strindberg and Knut Frænkel. In 1897 SA Andrée set off on a journey to the Arctic, North Pole with the hydrogen balloon Eagle. Along with him on the trips was Knut Fraenkel and Nils Strindberg. They departured from Svalbard in July 1897. After only two days the balloon lost hydrogen and stranded on the ice.
